IZSLER is a Public Institute offering services for animal health and food safety [link] [video], in particular diagnosis and research on transmissible and diffusive animal diseases and zoonoses.

IZSLER, particularly the Diagnostic Section of Piacenza, has a long tradition of research on paratuberculosis (Johne’s Disease) and it has been appointed as National Reference Centre for Paratuberculosis since 2003. Moreover, it has recently been appointed as WOAH Reference Laboratory for Paratuberculosis.

The activities carried out by the staff (coordinators, technicians and collaborators) include:

  • development of diagnostic methods;
  • production and distribution of reagents;
  • research;
  • education and training;
  • consulting and supporting public and private stakeholders;
  • organization of national proficiency tests both for direct and indirect diagnosis;
  • development of prevention and control strategies and surveillance programs with the support of the Emilia Romagna epidemiological Unit of IZSLER;
